Holidays are not far from now, and it’s time to start planning things; such as where you will be celebrating the holidays and with who. Planning such things is important if you want everything to go as enjoyable and as smooth as possible. But, have you considered planning one more thing that is important too? Well, that would be not to gain weight during the holidays season.

Being close to your family and friends and having fun while celebrating is, of course, the most important thing during the holiday season. But as you probably know, in the winter, people tend to consume more calories. Eating more during the winter is normal; because the weather is colder and the body needs more food to convert energy to be warmer. This could be avoided with some willpower and more importantly discipline.

1. Be Active with Family and Friends

On every holiday people tend to stay home, especially on Christmas days. It’s kind of a ritual to stay home and do nothing, just rest and eat. But this type of spending the family days is one of the reasons to gain weight during that time of the year.

If you get stuck too much, it would be bad for your health and body.

To prevent weight gain walking with your family or friends in the local park, will do wonderful work. Fitness might be a good suggestion to move a little. But if you are the type of person who doesn’t want to go outside or to the gym; simply you can workout at home – 40 minutes of yoga practice would make you feel amazing.

2. Eat Cookies and Other Sweets Wisely

This one will be hard, especially on Halloween and Christmas when everyone buys and bakes sweets for days.

At home, you can easily avoid the bad snacks when you take them out of your sight. But when you are outside, and you are in situations that are not under your control like your workplace or a dinner party; it’s best to learn how to say ‘NO’ to yourself and others or if you get sweets then eat a smaller portion for dinner.

If you are hungry and want something to snack with; try to replace the junk snacks with fruits or vegetables.

3. Reduce Stress Level and Get Plenty of Sleep

Colleagues, friends, the family, sometimes can be overwhelming with all these preps for the holidays and if you host a party or gather the whole family for the winter holidays, you can really burn out.

My advice to you is to get some workout done, so you can take off the steam or go for a massage for an hour or two. If you are calm and rested, everything will run smoothly and you’ll not be able to gain weight during holidays. Also, sleep is the best medicine – go to bed earlier, and you’ll feel much better in the morning.

4. Keep Meals Balanced With Protein

Holidays meals are full of carb and fat so if you want to balance your metabolism right try to eat more protein.

Protein is included in eggs, fish, meat, beans, quinoa etc. The best meal to keep or even lose weight is to eat more protein (50%), veggies (30%) and carbs (20% or less). Bet more on protein and vegetables, and fruits during this season.

5. Limit Liquid Calories

If you are trying to control your weight or you are on a diet, you better do not exaggerate with alcohol, soda and other high in calories beverages.

It’s better to take water first thing in the morning so you can make your metabolism going; this way you speed up your metabolism so that it can be absorbing the food easily later and not gain weight during holidays.

The same in the night – before bed, take a glass of water for the same reason, so your body can process the food faster.

7. Use a Smaller Plate

That’s a smart way to not overeat during the holidays because usually, people tend to eat on bigger plates and overeating.
